Whether your home is drowning in clutter, or it’s just a little messier than you’d like, there are steps you can proactively take to solve the issue. You should have a clean, comfortable home to live, work and play in. Here are the top five decluttering tips to make sure your home is organized and cozy.
Think vertically
Too often, we forget about a valuable space in our home – our walls! Walls provide a wonderful place to hang shelves, cabinets, hooks, and whatever else you can think of!
Use the one-in, one-out rule
This is a rule you’ll use throughout the year – not just when you declutter. Whenever you make a purchase of a shirt, make plans to get rid of an old shirt. This rule sets up a plan and makes sure your space doesn’t get flooded with new things.
Make three piles
One pile is what you’ll keep, one is what you’ll definitely get rid of, and one is a “maybe” pile. This lets you go through your items more quickly and make fast decisions. Afterward, go through a second round with the “maybe” pile. Then, you’ll know exactly what to keep, and what can be thrown out.
Be realistic
If you haven’t used something in the last 3 months- a year, it’s likely that you won’t ever use it. Instead of keeping the item in your space and mind, get rid of it by either trashing it, giving it away, or donating it.
Storage unit
If all else fails, put your extra items in a storage unit. Out of sight, out of mind right? Seriously – this is a game-changing way to lessen the stress if you have an overcrowded home! This is especially useful if your home is in transition.
